Chemistry

Course Description

Chemistry is the study of the composition of substances and the changes that they undergo. It includes the study of the properties of matter and the ways in which different substances interact, combine, and change. This course is a laboratory/lecture course designed to introduce students to general chemistry. Some of the major topics that we will cover in this course include the following: the structure of the atom and the properties of subatomic particles, nuclear chemistry, the role of electrons in chemical interactions, chemical bonding, the mole, the gas laws, chemical reactions, thermochemistry, equilibrium and reaction rates, and acids and bases.  The overall goal of this course is that students will be able to apply an understanding of atomic and molecular structure to explain the properties of matter, and predict the outcomes of chemical and nuclear reactions. The study of chemistry involves a great deal of abstract reasoning and critical thinking, and this course will strengthen students’ problem solving skills and mathematical proficiency.
