Introduction to Literature

Course Description

Through this course, students will review and build their knowledge of mechanics and conventions of the English language. This course is designed to prepare students for the academic rigor that is present throughout the English program at Eagle Ridge Academy. English 9 consists of the genre approach to the study of literature and includes the study of short stories, poetry, essays, contemporary and classic novels, and Shakespearean drama.  The course focuses on recognition and analysis of literary terms and literary devices, vocabulary, critical reading and analysis skills, and in conjunction with World History I, examines the historical, cultural, and social contexts relevant to the readings. English 9 focuses on reinforcing and developing fundamental writing skills, including MLA formatting, grammar, usage, and mechanics. English 9 will work to enhance students’ reading and writing skills in preparation for success on the PSAT 8/9 exam.
