Brandon Phelps
Biography
Brandon Phelps serves as both a science educator and an esports coach at Eagle Ridge Academy, where he teaches courses in General Chemistry, Pre-AP Chemistry, Astronomy, and Evolutionary Biology. Prior to obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences with a focus on Secondary Teaching from the University of Northern Colorado, he had worked in the IT sector for 15 years and acquired professional experience in academia, telecommunications, and enterprise systems. By incorporating this practical, real-world knowledge directly into his teaching, Mr. Phelps is committed to inspiring in students a lasting enthusiasm for science while ensuring they master fundamental concepts, develop critical literacy, and cultivate a deep appreciation for the natural world, no matter what career path they eventually choose.
In order to make sure that all students achieve success—particularly those who have difficulty with STEM subjects—Mr. Phelps stresses practical laboratory work, the analysis of data, and collaborative investigation. He helps students by using structured Socratic warm-up sessions, providing feedback based on rubrics, and holding daily tutoring appointments both before and after school. Apart from in the science classroom, Mr. Phelps heads the school’s competitive esports program—which ranks as one of the best in Brighton, Colorado—guiding student-athletes in areas such as strategic teamwork, communication, and digital citizenship. He received national acclaim when he was named one of the top five finalists for National Esports Coach of the Year in 2026. When he is not at school, he likes to hike, explore, and photograph the outdoors in Colorado with his family.
